Elkem joins hands with Ferroglobe to advance carbon capture and storage

Date:2024-04-05     Source:Elkem

The carbon capture and storage (CCS) project, a collaboration between Elkem and Ferroglobe in Rana, Norway, has recently received a funding of 17 million Norwegian kroner from Enova, a government investment fund in Norway.

Ferroglobe is a leading global producer of silicon metal and silicon-based specialty alloys. The project aims to develop practical and feasible technological solutions for carbon capture and energy recovery systems, while also promoting further advancements in CCS technology.

Elkem and Ferroglobe emit approximately 520,000 metric tons of CO2 annually. The project aims to capture around 95 percent of these emissions and recover 900 to 1,000 gigawatt-hours of energy. This energy can be used to meet the heating needs of households in Mo i Rana, Norway, with any surplus being supplied to the power grid.

Enova is committed to promoting environmentally friendly energy production and consumption in Norway, as well as advancing energy and environmental technologies. Authorized by the Norwegian government, Enova manages the energy fund and carries out various business activities using the fund.
